Emotional Connection: Families With Challenging Children
Family Dreams or Nightmares?
Family Dreams
What are your dreams for your children and family life? The tender togetherness, love, joy, and fun times you fondly envisioned are there in your mind’s eye; seeing your children grow up knowing they are loved, having a sense of connection, and joining in regular celebrations for achievements. Is this your reality? Congratulations; you are a lucky parent!!
A Different Reality
For the rest of us who wake up in the morning exhausted, wondering how to make it through another day with our kids, reality is quite different. We had dreams too as we gazed into the innocent eyes of our newborn, or the hope we held close even as we looked at the blank stare or depths of pain we saw in our older adopted or foster child, or a traumatized child of our own. We just knew that our love would overcome their early experiences.
But somewhere something went terribly wrong. Our love and vow to be a great parent apparently was not enough. Our experience is quite different than our dreams. We feel alone, in despair, seeking advice over and over again, hearing conflicting guidance, being encouraged by professionals to drug our kids with strong psycho-trophic drugs, with known and unknown dangers. We often fear for our home as well as our health. We can’t have babysitters, our own parents or our friends may not be able to handle our kids and often don’t want to. We may be a single parent without even the aid of a partner. We have to show up at the principal’s office all too often, and may have to seek new day care and schools or new teachers each year. Our kids may have been labeled Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Bipolar Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Asperger’s Syndrome, or other diagnostic anomaly.
As we experience discouragement and failure, we may not even like ourselves anymore, as we lose our temper again, do things we thought we would never do as a parent, feel guilt and remorse even as we rage in despair. Our whole self-image of who we are may be called in question as we struggle to cope. Is any of this familiar? Then hear this…you are not alone and you’re not crazy-but your life is.
